The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller, first performed in 1953, that explores themes of mass hysteria, power, reputation, and integrity. Set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 and based on the real-life Salem witch trials, the play follows a group of young girls who falsely accuse people in their Puritan community of witchcraft.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as an allegory for McCarthyism, a period in 1950s America when people were falsely accused of being communists. Like the witch trials, the accusations were often based on fear rather than evidence.
